Classic Croque Monsieur

Ingredients:

  • 4 slices of bread
  • 4 slices of ham
  • 8 slices of Gruyère cheese
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour to make a roux.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth. Cook until the sauce thickens.
  4. Season the sauce with nutmeg, salt, and pepper.
  5. Place 4 slices of bread on a baking sheet. Top each with a slice of ham and a slice of Gruyère cheese.
  6. Spread a spoonful of the sauce over each sandwich.
  7. Top each sandwich with another slice of bread, ham, and cheese.
  8. Spread the remaining sauce over the top of the sandwiches.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for about 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  10. Serve hot and enjoy!
