A traditional Nepali dish featuring protein-rich lentils served with fragrant basmati rice, perfect for a wholesome meal.

Dal Bhat

Serving Size: Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup split red lentils
  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 inch ginger, grated
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 4 cups water
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish

Directions:

  1. Rinse the lentils and rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
  2. In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle.
  3. Add the chopped onion, garlic, ginger, and green chilies. Sauté until the onions are translucent.
  4. Stir in the turmeric powder and add the rinsed lentils. Pour in 4 cups of water and season with salt.
  5. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 20 minutes, or until the lentils are soft.
  6. In a separate pot, bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Add the rinsed basmati rice and a pinch of salt. Cover and simmer on low heat for 15 minutes or until the rice is cooked through.
  7. Serve the dal hot, garnished with fresh cilantro, alongside the steamed rice.
