Ingredients:
- 1 cup split red lentils
- 1 cup basmati rice
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 inch ginger, grated
- 2 green chilies, slit
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 4 cups water
- Salt to taste
- Fresh cilantro for garnish
Directions:
- Rinse the lentils and rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
- In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle.
- Add the chopped onion, garlic, ginger, and green chilies. Sauté until the onions are translucent.
- Stir in the turmeric powder and add the rinsed lentils. Pour in 4 cups of water and season with salt.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 20 minutes, or until the lentils are soft.
- In a separate pot, bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Add the rinsed basmati rice and a pinch of salt. Cover and simmer on low heat for 15 minutes or until the rice is cooked through.
- Serve the dal hot, garnished with fresh cilantro, alongside the steamed rice.
