Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs beef shank, cut into large chunks
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch ginger, sliced
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 star anise
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

  1. In a large pot, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat.
  2. Season beef shank with salt and pepper, then sear until browned on all sides. Remove and set aside.
  3. Add onion, garlic, and ginger to the pot. Cook until fragrant.
  4. Stir in soy sauce, rice vinegar, brown sugar, star anise, and cinnamon stick.
  5. Return the beef shank to the pot and pour in the beef broth. Bring to a simmer.
  6. Cover and let it braise on low heat for 2-3 hours until the beef is tender.
  7. Once done, remove the beef shank and let the sauce reduce until thickened.
  8. Serve the beef shank with the reduced sauce and steamed rice.
